Experimenting With Lighting

After watching the recently featured tutorials about lighting, me and my classmates went into the TV studio in college so we could experiment with what we learned.

Backlighting

As I mentioned in my previous blog post, I would really like to incorporate the backlighting technique in my FMP. So when we got into the studio, the first thing we did was experiment with backlighting.

Practicing the technique in college was really helpful because I am now prepared to be able to do this in filming, if i use the techniques. This also showed me that I will be confident with using the lighting while filming.

Bounce Lighting

After watching the bounce lighting tutorials, I was eager to try out using this technique.

To fully experiment with the technique, we used a reflector instead of table cloths which were used in the tutorial. We found that the bounce light technique is very effective and easy to do. If I can think of a way to incorporate this technique in my FMP, I will.

Side Lighting

I really like this use of side lighting because it gives the shot a real sense of duality. It can show the good and bad inside a characters personality.

Rembrandt Lighting

Here, we experimented using Rembrandt lighting. Initially, our tutor believed that we needed two light sources to achieve this style. But when we were experimenting we found out that it is possible to do with just one light. So this was beneficial, because I now know how to do it with a single light. Which will save me time if I choose to do this lighting in my FMP.
