Tutorial Research #02- Colour Theory

For my next tutorial, I chose to research deeper into colour theory. For reasons similar to the last tutorial I chose, I want my film to have as much subtextual meaning as possible. The first time I ever noticed colour theory was when I watched “Breaking Bad” and have I would like to include something similar in my FMP.

What is Colour Theory:

  • Colours illicit emotions and have a psychological impact on the audience.
  • Colours can be used to create mood.

Three factors for determining colour:

  1. Hue– The colour itself.
  • Some films use an affinity of hue- utilising a monochromatic colour scheme.
  • Analogous colours. E.g. the matrix(green)

2. Saturation– the intensity of the colour.

  • Draining saturation can give a film a cold and gritty look.

3. Brightness– how light or dark the colour is.

  • Brightness can be used to affect individual colours.
  • This was mostly evident in the technicolour phase of cinema. Because seeing bright colours on a picture was in its own right, a reason to see the movie.
  • Bright images mostly feel lively and exiting.
  • Dark images can feel dramatic.
